These are profiles of some of our grant winners from this year.  The Ed. Fund again wishes them a hearty congratulations for formulating projects to enhance the education of West County students.  For a complete list of grant winners, please click here.

Winning Grants
Grant Title: DeJean ESCAPE Club
School: LoVonya DeJean Middle School

DeJean Middle School's ESCAPE Club encourages its members to be good citizens around campus and in their communities.  As a reward for their hard work, they take trips to a variety of exciting and fun locations all over Northern California.

Grant Title: First Grade Futbol
School: Mira Vista Elementary

Coach Interrante, a parent at Mira Vista and former semi-professional Italian footballer, imparts his knowledge of the sport to three classes of excited first-graders 2-3 times a week.  While focusing on the fundamentals, he is also preparing them for a schoolwide soccer tournament in May, which will be supported by local soccer players.

Grant Title: Get Your Newsletter!
School: Ellerhorst Elementary

Ellerhorst Elementary 6th-grade students wrote a grant to apply for $500 to start a school newsletter called the Junior Rattler Times.  Everyone in Mr. G's classroom has a role to play in this newsletter and the product looks amazing.  Visit the Junior Rattler Times' website for more details and give these students feedback and encouragement for their hard work.

Grant Titles: Learn and Grow/The Sunshine Classroom
School: LoVonya DeJean Middle School

Yulia Solovieva, a teacher at DeJean Middle School, is overseeing a project to revitalize the school gardens.  She's using the gardens to teach English to her ELD students and charging them with the task of developing a portion of the school library into a resource students can use to learn more about gardening.  The whole school is involved in this project as the woodworking class build birdhouses and will next work on making picnic tables and benches for all visitors to enjoy.

Grant Title: Harding InvestiGATE
School: Harding Elementary

Harding Elementary parents volunteer their time to provide enrichment lessons focused on science and engineering, math and literacy.  The Ed. Fund provided funds for the science and engineering and literacy cycles.  Each cycle culiminates in a schoolwide fair designed to help GATE students teach their classmates about what they've learned.

Grant Title: Murphy Blockheads
School: Murphy Elementary

The Murphy Blockheads meet on a weekly basis to learn more about science, technology, math and engineering through working with LEGO pieces.  The team competes regularly in in the FIRST LEGO League Competition.

Grant Title: Riverside Running Club
School: Riverside Elementary

Riverside Elementary started a Running Club to promote healthy lifestyles on and off campus.  Students participate in weekly running events with their peers.  The Ed. Fund visited on the day of the Turkey Trot, held the week of Thanksgiving.
