Superintendent of Schools for WCCUSD

Cheryl Cotton becomes WCCUSD’s 11th permanent superintendent—and the first permanent African American woman to serve in the role.

“I am honored to return to the community that shaped my educational journey and professional path,” said Cotton. “Together, we will center equity, support student success, and uplift the voices of our families and educators to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.”

Cotton last served as Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction at the California Department of Education, overseeing key programs focused on instructional quality, assessment, accountability, and educator support. She previously spent 14 years in WCCUSD as a school principal and Human Resources Director, and is a proud graduate of the district herself.

We’re grateful to welcome her back to the community—and to our board—as she continues to champion equity and excellence in public education.
